The Idea of Authenticity

I love the idea of authenticity.

The problem with authenticity is that it has become one of the terms that has been misused (authentic, when you really mean unique or different), misunderstood (uncontrollable expressions of one’s inner self), and weaponized (using authenticity as a shield for being insensitive, brutally honest, and rude). However, authenticity has become the gold standard if you want to be trusted, respected, and perceived as a credible source.

For some, an authentic existence equates to living one’s “best life” or “YOLO." Even when looking for definitions of authenticity from respected authorities, you’re likely to find diversity, for instance:

  • Being true to your roots (London professor)

  • Having a purpose (Leader in German telecom company)

  • Becoming who you are meant to be (Canadian CEO)

  • Having “soul” (Australian consultant)

  • Vision and values (Swiss manager)

  • Finding your path (Saudi entrepreneur)

  • Being ethical (Dutch lawyer)

(HBR, 2007)

For me, authenticity simply means demonstrating alignment between your head and heart, sensitivity and compassion in your words and behaviors, effort in self-discovery, and living your core values, especially when it’s difficult and challenging to do so.

In leadership, authenticity is risky; how transparent should I really be? How much of my “true self” can I really bring to work?

Authenticity is not a parlor trick or a marketing technique, it is something we “know when we see it” and being less than authentic is a painstaking way to ruin relationships and reputation.

There are many ways to express your authenticity. I hope the information this week assists you in clarifying and strengthening your personal definition of authenticity and leads to alignment in your daily practice as a leader.

Quote for Growth:

"Authentic leadership is not about being perfect. It is having the courage to admit when you’re wrong and to get on with solving problems, rather than covering them up."
-Bill George
